Breakaway Camp 2019: Pressing On

After a busy first week of school, Harding Academy’s robotics team, Breakaway 3937, was looking forward to a much needed retreat at Camp Tahkodah, a favorite location of many on the team, including Coach Brian Jones. The team made their way up to school at 6:45am on a Friday morning to make the drive to Floral, Arkansas. The aim of this year’s retreat was to introduce the team’s theme as well as the new members to the rest of the team. We have a lot of new and returning talent on our 2019-2020 roster!

The 2019-2020 season’s theme for Breakaway is “Pressing On.” Philippians 3:12-14 says, “Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” This year we want to not dwell on about our past and what we have done, but we want to focus on our future and what Christ will do in us.

For an example of putting aside the past to make improvements for the future, consider changes we are making to our Marketing and Chairman’s departments. Last year we had two obvious leaders, but after our marketing chair graduated, we were left with a decision to make. How would we choose a new leader from three equally capable people who all had the same amount of experience? We had to step away from our old system of leadership and completely restructure our leadership system. In the end, we all agreed that we needed to change our expectations that we had set last year and press on into new ideas that benefit the team. This year we are simply calling this department Outreach, and social media, awards, alumni relations, and sponsorship will fall within this redesigned leadership structure.

There are so many new and exciting things coming from Breakaway this season. With new members and new ideas, the possibilities are endless! Although we want to focus on the future, Breakaway will continue to remember the legacy that has been built before us and try to improve on it.
