LEGO Club Cup 2019

What is the LEGO Club Cup?

The 4th annual LEGO Club Cup took place in the Harding Academy gym on November 2, 2019. Numerous teams from 4 different schools gathered together to celebrate a season of learning, fun, and hard work. LEGO Club was started in the fall of 2015 by FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) team 3937, Breakaway, as a way to spread the love of STEM to elementary school students. Each season, Breakaway members volunteer to mentor 10 LEGO Club teams from Harding Academy. Every team has at least one Breakaway member guiding them throughout the season.

The Game

Each year teams are given a never-before-seen game where they must build a robot using only a LEGO Mindstorms kit. The game is designed by Breakaway head coach, Brian Jones. This year’s LEGO Club game was called Gridlock. Robots were designed to place foam cubes in wooden slots. When an alliance got their cubes in a row, a gridlock was created, scoring them extra points. However, the opposing alliance could push the cubes out of the grid from the other side. At the end of the game, teams got extra points for touching or hanging on the “matrix,” a pole that ran above the width of the field.

This year, teams were scored in 3 different categories as well as the robot game. The team that showed the most team spirit got the “Team Spirit” award. This year’s “Team Spirit” award went The Boneless Tree Kittens from Harding Academy. Teams also got scored in the “Innovation” award category. This award was given to the team that showed something new and innovative on their robot. The Normanators from Southwest Middle School blew the judges away with their robot design that was truly anything but normal. The final category was the “Autonomous” award. In the Autonomous round of the LEGO club game, robots performed pre-programmed tasks in hope of scoring a few extra points. The team that consistently performed the best autonomous run won the “Autonomous” award. This year the team that rose to the top was the Sour Patch Kids from Harding Academy. Every single team brought their A-game this year and performed exceptionally well. It was by far, the best LEGO Club season to date.
