A Start to a Season Like No Other

On January 9, Breakaway was sitting together (socially distanced of course!), awaiting the annual FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) Game Reveal Livestream. We had so many questions. How would this season look? What changes would be made to the game? Would there be in-person competitions? However different it might look, we were prepared to make the best of the season we were given and be a “Force For Change”!

At-Home Challenges

Since watching the Livestream, we have been blown away by all the events we can still participate in from home! There are three different challenges: Game Design, Infinite Recharge at Home, and the First Innovation Challenge. In the Game Design Challenge, each team can design an FRC game with its own scoring system and rules and submit their game to the FRC Game design committee for consideration in future seasons. The next challenge is called Infinite Recharge at Home. This challenge films your robot performing skills challenges using elements from last year’s game. Teams with the best scores in the least amount of time win. Last but not least, my personal favorite, the Innovation Challenge. In this challenge, you get to design a product that can solve a real-world problem. The problem goes right along with the theme for this year, Game Changers. Each team needs to create a product that has to do with sports or exercise.

Getting Started

All of this, along with the in-person events, made Breakaway excited to get started on this season. We delegated tasks and got started right away. This year has looked very different from a regular season, but Breakaway 3937 is ready to be Game Changes and make the best of what this season has to offer.
