From Hidden Figure to Sonic Boom: Dr. Christine Darden Inspires the Girls of Breakaway

The girls of Breakaway recently had the opportunity to meet “Hidden Figure” Dr. Christine Darden at Harding University. Dr. Darden was the keynote speaker for Harding’s American Studies Institute (ASI). ASI is a quality program that educates attendees on American citizenship and culture. Former first ladies, presidents, Holocaust survivors, and many other people who have influenced the world have presented at ASI.

Dr. Christine Darden is a world-renowned mathematician. She worked for NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) for 40 years as a human computer and in the field of aeronautical engineering. While speaking at Harding, she shared what it was like to be on the team that discovered how to reduce the sonic boom, which was an important development for airplane mechanics as well as air and space policy making.

Dr. Darden held a special session just with the girls of Breakaway. This year we have more female members than ever before, and it was a true inspiration to learn from this giant of a scientist. She talked about her commitment and dedication to learning more and getting her master's degree in applied science. Her journey throughout the STEM world hasn’t been easy, but Dr. Darden has many extraordinary achievements. I was extremely grateful for this event! It was truly a once in a lifetime experience.

Thank you Harding University for our "out of this world" opportunity! Thank you also for sponsoring Breakaway 3937!
